In 1962, the photographer Bert Stern fired a series of photos of Marilyn Monroe that have collectively come to be known as "The Last Sitting." Boozy taken during several sessions at the Hotel Bel-Air, the photographs are probably the most famous images ever captured of America's most famous actress: Monroe, sleepy eyes and naked, sips a glass of champagne , enacts a fan dance with different kinds diaphanous scarves, erotic romps with mischief on a bed of white linen. Six weeks after it landed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent overdose of barbiturates.
The photos endure as part of the artifacts-as the last visible sign of the woman (a legacy Stern reinforced by the decision to publish the contact Monroe had itself crossed the red marker). But the images are also remarkable for the raw truths they appear to reveal. In them we see a comedy actor whose talents were overshadowed by her sex appeal, a woman who is cannily conscious of its status pinup, but also beginning to show its 36 years. In many shots, it is obviously intoxicated. It was an unfortunate time for Monroe. Sadly famous for its on-1961, a brief stint in a psychiatric ward.
Stern excavated and preserved poignant humanity of the real beautiful woman, but also fragile, needy, flawed from the monumental sex symbol. In our armor, airbrushed age, its implementation feels almost revolutionary.
Forty-six years later, Stern has reviewed its plans classic with Lindsay Lohan, another prodigious actress whose fame is not quite to the extent of his professional achievements. Stern, who shot at the photos of the film, rather than digital, said he was interested in Lindsay Lohan because he suspected "it has much more depth to her" as you might suppose "These teenage movies." Indeed, many in the film industry think that Lindsay Lohan has yet to pursue projects to equal his gifts. Without putting too fine a point on it, one might say Lindsay Lohan, like Monroe, a knack for courting the tabloids trigger until his career. (Readers will recall that Lindsay Lohan has its own Billy Wilder moment two summers ago over the Georgia rule.) Stern also said that The project was born from his interest in "controversial women," or "bad girl", as "Britney, Paris And Lindsay. "Monroe is in a sense the first tabloid queen.
Although Lindsay Lohan is ready to resume photos may seem like a nod to his cunning scandalous past, the actress offered a simple explanation. "I have not had much thought to put into it. I mean, Bert Stern? Make a shoot Marilyn? When is it's going to find? It's really an honor." During d 'pause in the day, shoot, Lindsay Lohan sitting cross-legged on a bed in the four-room suite and spoke to me, inasmuch voices familiar with its staccato rhythms, respectful of his obsession with Monroe. His interest took root a decade ago with multiple viewings Niagara during the filming of London The Parent Trap. She even bought an apartment where Marilyn lived. "If you saw my house I… many things Marilyn," she said, with a huge painting of Monroe.
"It's great," Lindsay Lohan said of the painting, a Christmas, "because it is this picture of her, and she is likely cartoony, and is a big bottle of pills next to her , and they've decreased over. "Lindsay Lohan Monroe called suicide" tragic "and then added, elliptical:" You know, it is also tragic that recently happened to someone else. "whom I I asked if she was referring to Heath Ledger. She nodded: "They are both excellent examples of what this industry can do to someone." Why some and not others, I asked, to the extent that it has often seemed that the three times a rehabbed Lindsay Lohan could meet the same fate. Lindsay Lohan responded with an ounce of trouble: "I do not know. I am not them. But I am sure that hell would not let him come to me . "However, one wonders whether Lindsay Lohan participation in this project, taking into account all the spooky parallel, photography is not the equivalent of moving into a haunted house. (Which, in fact, she might have already done so.)
Lindsay Lohan regarded as a branch of the theatrical presentation, a chance to live the role of an idol. "I wanted to portray the book and the take stock as much as I could, to bring it back to life," she says. Hence the strict mimesis: scarves, nudity, and everything. " Not more than fifteen minutes had passed since she had arrived, and she had already decided to take her clothes! " Stern wrote of Monroe, in his introduction to swaggering The Complete Last Sitting, the book in which all 2571 photos were collected. He might have said the same thing about Lindsay Lohan. "I was at ease with it," says the actress of nudity (even if it has to do confess "250 crunches," the previous night). All compound in winged eyeliner and shellacked blonde wig, Lindsay Lohan, who has returned to his former sensual, sometimes seemed more Marilyn than the thin, slightly decreased wife of the original photos of Marilyn. "It was very similar, déjà vu might say, like to revisit an old street," said Stern.
The original photos, however, are characterized by an almost claustrophobic intimacy between photographer and muse. In the first session, Stern persuade the entourage of stylists to leave it alone with Monroe. The shooting has taken on symbolic (if not the reality) contours of a liaison. The rise of celebrity industrial complex has made this kind of pas de deux tense virtually impossible. During the shooting Lindsay Lohan, the crowd consisted Lindsay Lohan's manager, his bodyguard, and her younger brother, Ali, a makeup artist and assistant, a hairdresser and assistant, a stylist, a manicure, a sentry to watch the borrowed diamonds; Stern, His manager, and two assistants photo. Lindsay Lohan and Stern has worked in an adjoining room, while the rest of us as a hover outside an entrance to groupies backstage.
"This is a woman who is herself giving to the public," said Lindsay Lohan, the Monroe photos, when we approached the next day by phone. "She is saying, 'Look, you take a lot of me, then I do give it to myself. "She's taking back control." Like any tabloid veteran, Lindsay Lohan understands the power of a photograph, and that the best way to respond to a society that views you only as a picture maybe just on its own terms ..
