The Philippine government is to ask for an excuse from the producers of the hit US television series "Desperate Housewives" for a cultural slur against Filipino doctors, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said on its web site Wednesday.The certified cited a new episode where actress Teri Hatcher, who plays Susan Mayer, requested whether the person be there to her during a health discussion "can I verify those diplomas because I want to build positive that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."
Requested if the government would look for an excuse from the producers of the show, and ABC television network that takes it, executive secretary Eduardo Ermita said: "Yes, I feel we should, on behalf of our Filipino experts."
"On the face, we can seem at it as a cultural insult. We are looked down upon too a lot, believing the number of our medical experts in the US," the Inquirer quoted Ermita says.
Ermita similarly petitioned to civil society groups and extra Filipino organizations in the US to "call the interest" of the show producers, and Hatcher, to the "racial slur."
Filipino ambassador in Los Angeles Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon wrote a letter of protest to the ABC network saying that Filipino medicinal employees were in demand all over the world.
"The US identify the students of Philippine medicinal and nursing schools and in common, does not necessitate additional schooling in the US for Filipino healthcare experts," she added.
Aragon also said several Americans go to the Philippines for medicinal examines that they cannot manage to pay for at home, the foreign department said in a report.

If this is not serious, why are the whites refrained from making racial slurs on the blacks. Now they are making "jokes" on the other colored people. what if the colored doctors and nurses and paramedics just sit for a day for a protest, what will happen to the hospitals, and the like, of USA? just a thought. And maybe ABC's desperate housewives pays for the hospitals. Pls. stop making excuses. ABC has apologized but the damaged has been done. But for friendship sake let's forgive.
Desperate Housewives is supposed to be a form of entertainment.I cannot understand why there is a need to insult Filipino professionals in the medical field just to entertain people.I am proud to be a Filipino and we have a rich heritage which is a mixture of different cultures.Our doctors and nurses are known for their "charisma" and tender loving care towards their patients.`
The best way to make people listen and stop all this racial slurs against minorities, is to hit them where it hurts most... their pockets! So, to all Filipinos and other minorities that were offended and are often made fun of should boycott the desperate show Desperate Housewives, ABC and Walt Disney, who owns ABC. Boycott altogether!
The contention that it was just another joke is weak and irresponsible, considering that the words were specifically "Med School from the Philippines", instead of say, "diploma mill from the Philippines". It wouldn't have been that bad since a lot of countries would have been included. The specific phrase, therefore, is derogatory and racist as it selected a specific country or race. Had the show's ignorant and shortwitted writers done their homework, they would have found out that most of our medical schools are accredited/certified in the United States. For this reason, many foreigners, including a significant number from the United States, take advantage of the very reasonable expense to finish medical school in the Philippines.
